Description
The White-Crowned Sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) is a medium-sized songbird native to North America. It is marked by a gray face and distinctive black and white stripes on the upper head. Their tranquil call is melodic and complex. This sparrow breeds in brushy areas of the northernmost parts of North America, the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Coast. These northerly breeding populations are migratory and tend to winter through most of North America and south to central Mexico. The southerly populations are largely resident. The white-crowned sparrow forages on the ground for seeds, plant parts and insects. Sometimes they will take flight to catch flying insects. In the winter, they will forage in flocks. White-crowned sparrows nest in low bushes or on the ground under cover of shrubs. They will lay a clutch of three to five brown and gray or greenish-blue eggs. The white-crowned sparrow has a natural alertness mechanism, which it employs during migration to stay awake up to two weeks at a time. This sparrow was photographed on the Ruston Way waterfront in Tacoma, Washington, USA.
