The 200 species of Castilleja, are commonly known as Indian Paintbrush. These annual and perennial plants are native to the western part of the Americas from Alaska south to the Andes, northern Asia, and one species as far west as the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia. In Northern Arizona they can be found in open meadows among the grasses they need to thrive. These Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja miniata) were growing in the sub-alpine meadow of Summerland in Mount Rainier National Park, Washington State, USA.
