The Western Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio rutulus) is a butterfly belonging to the Papilionidae family. It is a common species present in western North America. The normal range of the western tiger swallowtail is from British Columbia to North Dakota in the north and Baja California and New Mexico in the south. Their habitat includes urban parks and gardens, as well as in rural woodlands and riparian areas. The males often congregate at pools, streams and rivers, drinking from the water and mud to extract minerals and moisture. The tiger swallowtail is brightly colored, having yellow wings with black stripes. Their wing span can be 3 to 4 inches. They also have blue and orange spots near the tail. This tiger swallowtail was photographed on a plant by the Iron Bear Trail in the Wenatchee National Forest, Washington State, USA.
